Building the App Was the Easy Part
Roughly two-thirds of all app installs still start with a search inside the App Store or Google Play. Not an ad. Not a press article. A search. Which means the store listing you spent one afternoon on is doing more sales work than the six months of engineering behind it.
App Store Optimization (ASO) is how you win those searches. It is the closest thing mobile has to SEO, it costs nothing but attention, and most competitors are doing it badly.
How the Two Stores Differ
Treating both stores identically is the most common ASO mistake. They index completely differently.
| Apple App Store | Google Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Indexed for keywords | App name, subtitle, hidden 100-char keyword field | App name, short description, full long description |
| Long description | Not indexed | Heavily indexed |
| Keyword repetition | Wasteful — never repeat | Mild repetition helps (2–3× naturally) |
| Review response | Supported, influences ratings | Supported, influences ratings |
| Update cadence signal | Moderate | Strong |
| Localisation | Per-country keyword fields | Per-language descriptions |
Write two distinct listings. Reusing your App Store copy on Play wastes your single biggest ranking asset there.
Step 1: Find Keywords People Actually Type
Start from how a non-technical person describes the problem, not how you describe the product. A user searching for your invoicing app types "send invoice," not "financial workflow automation."
Where to get real terms:
- App Store Connect and Play Console search terms reports — your own data first
- Store autocomplete — type your seed term and record every suggestion
- Competitor listings — the words in their title and subtitle are their bets
- Your support inbox and reviews — customers name the app's job for you
- Google Search Console, if you have a website for the same product
Score each candidate on three axes: search volume, relevance and how strong the current top three results are. A term you can realistically reach the top five for beats one you'll rank 40th on.
Step 2: Write the Metadata
App name (30 characters)
The highest-weighted field in both stores. Format:
Brand: Primary Keyword. "Ledgerly: Invoice & Expenses" beats "Ledgerly" every time.
Subtitle / short description (30 / 80 characters)
Second-highest weight. Cover secondary keywords and give a reason to tap. "Send invoices in 30 seconds" does both.
iOS keyword field (100 characters)
Comma-separated, no spaces, no plurals, no repeats of words already in your name or subtitle, no competitor brand names. Every wasted character is a wasted ranking.
Play long description (4,000 characters)
Google indexes this fully. Lead with a 2–3 sentence summary containing your primary keyword, then use short sections with real subheadings covering features, use cases and audiences. Aim for 2–3 natural mentions of your primary term — not stuffing.
Step 3: Win the Tap (Conversion Rate)
Ranking gets you seen. Creative gets you installed — and because both stores factor install rate into ranking, creative is also a ranking lever.
Icon. One recognisable shape, high contrast, no text, legible at 60px. Test it at thumbnail size on a real phone before shipping.
First two screenshots. Over 60% of visitors never scroll the gallery. Those two frames must show the single best outcome your app delivers, with a short caption in large text. Show the product in use, not empty states.
Preview video. 15–30 seconds, delivers value in the first 3 seconds, readable with sound off.
Ratings. The gap between 4.2 and 4.6 stars is worth more installs than most keyword work. Prompt for ratings after a success moment — never on launch — and reply to every negative review; many users update their score after a genuine reply.
Step 4: Keep the Installs
Both stores measure what happens after the install. Retention, session length and uninstall rate feed back into rankings, which is why a technically excellent listing on a mediocre app plateaus.
The fastest wins are almost always onboarding: shorten it, delay the signup wall, and get the user to one real success moment inside the first session.
A Realistic 90-Day ASO Plan
| Weeks | Focus | Expected outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Keyword research, competitor teardown, baseline metrics | A ranked keyword target list |
| 3–4 | Rewrite name, subtitle, keyword field, both descriptions | Impressions begin moving |
| 5–8 | New icon and first three screenshots; A/B test on Play | Conversion rate lift of 10–30% |
| 9–12 | Review-prompt flow, reply to backlog, localise top 3 markets | Rating improves; install velocity rises |
Change one major variable at a time and wait 7–14 days between changes, or you will never know what worked.
What to Measure
- Impressions — is your keyword work landing?
- Product page views → installs (conversion rate) — is your creative landing?
- Keyword rankings for your top 20 terms
- Rating and review velocity
- Day-1, Day-7, Day-30 retention — the ceiling on everything else
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ASO take to show results?
Metadata changes typically move rankings within 3–14 days. Creative changes show conversion effects almost immediately. A full ASO programme compounds over 3–6 months.
Is ASO cheaper than paid user acquisition?
Substantially. ASO is a fixed effort cost that keeps delivering; paid installs stop the day the budget stops. Most apps should fix ASO before buying installs — otherwise you pay for traffic that converts badly.
Should I launch on iOS or Android first?
That depends on your market, monetisation model and budget. We break the decision down in iOS vs Android: which should you build first in 2026.
How often should I update my listing?
Revisit keywords every 8–12 weeks and with every significant feature release. Consistent app updates are themselves a positive ranking signal, particularly on Google Play.
Do app store reviews really affect rankings?
Yes — both average rating and review velocity are inputs. More importantly, rating is the strongest single influence on whether a user who sees your listing installs it.
